A wedding based upon western attire, décor and food would not usually be considered a truly formal affair, but it hasn’t been too long ago since former President Bush walked his daughter down the aisle at their Texas ranch, right? So it can be done, and done very nicely.

Western theme wedding invitations; seeing it in black and white, it almost looks like an oxymoron, doesn’t it? Well, in looking at some of them, yes, it does. If a saddle, cacti, cowboy boots and barbed wire are how you picture your wedding, western themed wedding invitations just like that can be purchased from cheap western wedding invitation stores.

Quite honestly, however, most of these designs look like a child’s birthday party invitation. Some of them even look like ‘wanted posters’-complete with western-styled font and format.

A western theme wedding invitation(and the wedding it announces) doesn’t have to be fodder for CMT’s wedding reality shows. After all, it’s doubtful the Bush family sent out wedding invitations that said ‘wanted’ or ones shaped like a cowboy boot.

An invitation for a western wedding can be designed to evoke feelings of romance and chivalry, simplicity and charm. Here’s how…

• Western wedding invitations should be done on either a high quality cotton or parchment paper. Tea-stained, ivory or even the palest of pink or yellow would be appropriate colors. The choice of having them printed or engraved comes down to a matter of budget. Remember, though, wedding invitations usually end up in the trash.

• An invitation for a western wedding allows for embellishments such as lace, rough-edged paper or brass corners.

• Fonts for western wedding invitations should be reminiscent of the times. There are hundreds, if not thousands to pick from.

• Western wedding invitations are often watermarked with a black and white or sepia toned picture in the background of either a picture of the bride and groom or something appropriate to the theme. This something appropriate may include a patchwork quilt, a bouquet of flowers in an old vase, or a lacey handkerchief and a pocket watch.

• When deciding on the text for a western wedding invitation, proper etiquette should be adhered to in regards to what is included. For examples of what this looks like, there are any number of websites that can help you. This will be left to the discretion of the bride and groom.

• Western style wedding invitations are no exception to the rule when it comes to including information on the reception and dress ‘code’. As a matter of fact, since most western weddings will likely include a casual or even outdoor reception (often times translated BBQ), it is especially important to instruct your guests how to dress for the occasion.

Planning a wedding is a big deal. No matter how big or small, formal or informal; the invitations set the tone for what your guests anticipate the big day to be.
