What is The History Of Wedding Invitations
Those days were before the time of the printing press was invented and as such there were no printed messages or cards, the news of the event was spread essentially y the town criers and as such you can say that the earliest wedding invitations were actually people and usually there were not specific invitees and anyone who heard of the occasion was invited to the occasion.
This method was very efficient because during the Middle Ages the illiterate percentage was very high so sending written messages would not work.
Here is a brief background of the history of wedding invitations from the 1800s to now.
• The Industrial Revolution
The industrial revolution was the era that saw the first written message of invitation for a wedding. After lithography was invented people were able to send out written messages to people to inform them of the upcoming occasion.
Though the postage systems were unreliable and often double envelopes were used to protect the messages, which were essentially delivered by hand by the postman on his trusty horse.
The same tradition still lives on today, where double envelopes are used to send out the wedding invitations even after the advent of effective postage service.
• 1800s
More recent times like this saw the beginning of the modern invitation, most top selling invitations today would have looked very similar during the 1800s people began coming up with creative designs, printed on paper, some designed with calligraphy and other fancy printing methods were also used. The invitations would be sent out, traditionally by mail to the recipients.
• 1900s
The 1900s also did not see much difference from the traditional invitations we know today; the history of wedding invitations has a fair bit of stasis. The number of invitation card designers and manufacturers increased and more and more designs came into the market.
Significantly around the 1970s, was a point in time that saw a fair bit of difference in the designs of the invitation cards, people sought after brighter and beautiful colorful designs for their wedding invitations, these cards were also unique for their creative wordings on the cards?
Traditionally engraved cards were always very popular especially during this period
