Wedding Invitation Borders – Complete Guide

Complete Guide To Wedding Invitation Borders

A beautiful and elegant wedding invitation borders are what makes wedding invites stand out. The wedding invitation sets the tone for the overall look and feel of the wedding.
Your wedding invitation is the first impression people get of what your big day will be like. So with that being said, let’s get down to some of the basics of wedding invitations.

Wedding invitations; so many to choose from-too many to choose from. But when you begin looking, you’re probably going to notice a few things most every wedding invitation has in common (besides the ‘who, what, when and where’). One of which is the fact that the invitation has a border. The border can either be the way the edge of the paper is cut and/or the graphics or embossing on the outside of the wedding invitation.

Wedding invitation borders can be simple and understated or in high contrast to the rest of the invitation. It really comes down to a matter of a) taste and b) what look you’re going after.

When it comes to the edging of the paper you’ll have a choice of smooth cut, deckled (ragged) or die cut (specific shapes cut into the paper’s edge). Any of these are appropriate for both formal and informal weddings. All paper can be smooth cut, while heavier, more rigid paper such as card stock doesn’t look good deckled.

It looks like a second grader tore it out of a magazine. Deckled edging should be reserved for high quality cotton and linen papers. It gives a soft, gently worn appearance; romantic, in fact. On the other hand, die cuts do the same thing for the heavier, less expensive papers.

Die cuts are available in just about any shape you’d wish to have. You could select sea shells for a beach or tropical theme wedding, horseshoe or cowboy boot for a western wedding, wedding bells or hearts for a more traditional wedding or even the mascot from your college football team if you’re in the notion.

Now let’s move on to wedding invitation borders that are on the actual invitation; either printed, embossed or raised. Printed wedding invitation borders in either a shade lighter or darker than the paper provide an exquisite and distinctive look to any invitation no matter what type or quality of paper is used.

Using a simple line or border of ivy, roses, or wedding bells is never a mistake when designing your wedding invitation. On the other hand, A high contrast border of the same will make your wedding invitations stand out; making the announcement that your wedding will do the same. For example…a pure white wedding invitation with a black line border can be used to emphasize the formality of your wedding.

Specialty wedding invitation borders (specific die cuts, for example) can increase the cost of your wedding invitations significantly, but for more general borders, you’ll most likely be able to find just what you’re looking for from any of the online sources for wedding invitations or your local print shop.
