In the past there were some strict rules for wedding etiquette invitations, but with the time they have been relaxed, but still you need some common sense and a good understanding about the proper use of words.
There is a reason for all the etiquette used in wedding invitations. Therefore you must know how to use the proper words in order to make the reader clearly understand, who is invited.It is very important to spell out the professional titles such as Reverend, Doctor, Major etc.
For names on your wedding invitation, but with the relaxed rules it may written in their shorter forms as well. You should not write any nicknames on the invitations.
An academic qualification such as a PhD is not used, unless that particular person is a person with a theological degree. It is advised to spell out the street names as well like Street, Avenue etc.
If it is a formal wedding you should spell out the days, weeks, time and the numbers as well. It will be a bit confusing to address when both parents are Doctors, Professors or having PhD’s.
In this situation it is better to mention their social form of address, like if both of them are known socially as ‘Doctor and Doctor’ it is better to use that.
If a one person is specifically honored then both are addressed separately as Doctor, along with their full name. There is a specific technique to be used for divorced parents as well.
If they have a child he or she is addressed with their name, without mentioning the word family. Give the hosts of your wedding a top billing in the invitation. Do not do any hand-writings in the invitation or do not mention any gift suggestions.
If you do not want to invite the children to the wedding, mention only the names of parents. No punctuation marks are used except after addressing the titles such as Dr. or Mr. Formal invitations are written in third person language and capitol letters are not meant to be on the starting of every line.
The phrase ‘honor of your presence’ is traditionally used in most of the invitations but it can be edited formally such as ‘request the pleasure of your presence’, ‘invited to celebrate the marriage’ and so on, but do not use any casual sentences.
Hand write all addresses in the invitation envelopes and if you need to give directions to the place, place a map giving the directions in a separate enclosure.
